Apple Crumble

A twist on Grandma’s recipe, first made when I had a glut of apples and leftover oats from an Anzac biscuit bake-up. It’s delightfully oozy in the middle, crunchy on top—and always made with love.

Ingredients
- For the Apple Base
- 6 Large Granny Smith Apples (or any large firm, tart apple)
- 1 Cup of Castor Sugar
- 1 Tablespoon of Plain Flour
- 1 Heaped Teaspoon of Cinnamon
- For the Crumble
- 1 Cup of Rolled Oats
- 1 Cup of SR Flour
- 1 Cup of Brown Sugar
- 125gms Salted Butter (Melted)
- 1/2 Teaspoon of Cinnamon
Preheat your oven to 180C.
Crumble
In a bowl add all the dry ingredients and combine well with a hand whisk. Once combined, add the melted butter and make sure its all well combined and some small ‘clumps’ are evident. Set aside.
Apple Base
In a bowl add all the dry ingredients and combine well with a hand whisk. Set aside.
Peel and core the apples and cut the apple flesh into approx 12mm cubes. It doesn’t have to be accurate. Remember the larger the pieces, a little more time may be needed in cooking.
Add the chopped apple to the bowl of dry ingredients and using your clean hands work the apple through the mixture to make sure it’s coated on all sides and all the dry is used.
Assembly
Place the coated apple pieces into a 25cm pie dish (approx 6cm deep) and spread evenly.
Top with the crumble mixture making sure using your hands that it has different size ‘crumb/lumpy’ bits to give it lots of texture.
Cooking
Please the assembled dish into the middle of the oven and cook for approx 35mins or until the crumble is toasty and golden brown. The apple inside will be soft and have formed a rich oozy sauce.
Serve
Serve on it’s own or with fresh Jersey or pouring cream.
Additions you might like
Don’t be afraid to experiment with this recipe. You can use different fruit, or you can like I often do, add flaked almonds to the crumble mixture or coconut and I am also prone to putting some dark chocolate drops in the apple mix to create an oozy chocolate sauce.
